Mount Bromo is an active cinder cone volcano located in Tengger Caldera, East Java, Indonesia. The name Bromo is after Brahma, one of the Gods in Hinduism. He is believed as the creator of everything. Tengger is derived from the name of the local tribe who live around Bromo. That name itself is an abbreviation from a legendary story about a couple named Rara Anteng and Jaka Seger that local people believe that they were Tenggerese ancestors. The Tenggerese people also believe that Rara Anteng & Jaka Seger's children still live around Tengger Caldera wall.
Most of Tenggerese people are Hindus. That is why they also consider Bromo as their holy volcano. There are some inscriptions state that Tengger Tribe were originally from Majapahit Kingdom, the biggest Hindu kingdom for more than 200 years. Tenggerese people have lived there for decades. They still uphold their custom and culture.
Even they have their own rituals, such as Yadnya Kasada, for Bromo Volcano. They have to bring up some offerings to the volcano annually during Kasada. This ritual is an expression of gratitude that they are allowed to live on such a fertile area which can grow many crops and have livestocks. They also believe that this ritual is a protection for them from any kinds of havoc. Yadnya Kasada ritual comes from a folklore where the youngest child of Rara Anteng and Jaka Seger named Kusuma had to sacrifice himself to jump into Bromo crater. He advised that the next generation had to give offerings, such as crops, to Bromo Volcano in order to calm its rage and avoid people from disasters and plague.
