Waterfall is a natural phenomenon that always amaze every person to see. It is formed when a river flows over different rock layers, with softer rock eroding faster than harder rock, causing the hard rock to overhang and eventually collapse, creating a vertical drop in the water flow. However, Tumpak Sewu has a unique phenomenon that makes it distinguished. It is a tiered waterfall because people can see that the Water drops in a series of distinct steps or falls. This waterfall flows from the slope of Semeru Volcano, the tallest volcano on Java Island, through Glidih River on 500 masl.

Tumpak Sewu has different types of rock layers. On the top is dominated by volcanic rocks from Semeru Volcano. On the second layer is limestone. There is a karstification process around that layer which makes some underground rivers seep through the rocks and flow down the waterfall like a curtain. This is why people call it as the most beautiful waterfall in Indonesia.

There is a panorama spot to see Tumpak Sewu from distance. It is only a few steps from the car park. After that, people need to walk about 1,5 km to see the waterfall closely. There are some small bridges to access the waterfall area easily downstairs. There is also an interesting cave called Tetes Cave which is not too far from Tumpak Sewu Waterfall but has different direction.
